My name is Mindy and I live just outside Edinburgh in Scotland with my husband and 3 dogs. I began making beads after getting the equipment as a gift for Christmas 2005. Since then I have been working away perfecting my techniques and developing my ideas.
I have a little old Victorian washhouse that we converted into a workshop where I spend every spare minute I have. I work with soft glasses using a minor torch and I have a paragon digitally controlled kiln for annealing the beads once they are made. I work each bead individually in the flame; sometimes this can take up to an hour just for one bead if it's very complicated. Once the bead is finished I put it straight into the kiln where it is cooled very slowly overnight in a digitally controlled programme that ensures they will last and last. If beads aren't annealed properly there is a chance they will break at some point in the future, which would be a waste of my time and yours and would make for some very unhappy customers along the way!
When the beads emerge from the kiln the next morning I carefully clean and inspect each one. The first grade beads are put into sets and strung, then photographed. When it comes to pricing the sets I consider the length of time they took to make and the cost of all the materials involved.
The types of glass I use are all soft and have to be compatible with one another, they include, Moretti, Laushca, vetrofond, kugler, Rocio, ASK and Reichenbach. Some of these glasses are more expensive to buy as they have a very high silver content, I tend to use these ones most in organic beads as they produce wonderful colour reactions when combined. I also use pure silver leaf and copper leaf in my beads.
