Serendipity - The lucky tendency to find interesting, desirable or valuable things by chance. Serendipity is often used as a sophisticated way of describing luck. When things happen out of serendipity, it usually seems like they're meant to be, although they happen through coincidence. A perfect use of serendipity is to describe a situation where a person was pursuing something and stumbles upon an even greater find or fortune. When I was in elementary school, I came home each week with spelling words to study. My family and I would spend that week using these words as often as possible to memorize their meanings and spelling. Serendipity was a spelling word one week and it really stuck in our family long after that spelling test. We use it to this day and have found many situations where it was the most fitting word and it became my favorite! When it came time to develop my business, I was reminded of this powerful word and realized it was the perfect fit for my venture. You may have stumbled into my store but I know there is something here for everyone. I am a mixed media artist and love blending materials and textures to present a desirable outcome. A bit of me is in each piece, and often, my very creative husband and mother as well! We all must have an outlet of some kind – to relieve the stresses of the days, to unwind and feel unique. My outlet is working with my hands. I am so happy that after many years of seeking, I have found my niche. Jewelry design and creation allows me unlimited amounts of freedom and expression. After the kids go to bed, I often drift away into jewelry land. I get so involved that before I know it, hours have passed and I have to remind myself to get to bed. I often dream about jewelry or wake up with new designs in my thoughts. All of my family members work with their hands in one artistic way or another. When I was a youngster, art was a very important part of our daily life. My mom stayed home with my brother and I for several years and made money by selling her creations. She is an incredible painter and crafter. She was always making silk flower arrangements and art out of bread dough. I think the most popular was making names for kids' rooms and painting them the colors of their room. I still have mine! I was always interested in what she was doing and in seeing the art made by other people. Craft fairs on the weekend were commonplace, with my mom sitting in her booth and my brother and I running around the fair looking at others' work or just causing mischief! Her booths were always full of customers and their custom requests. I developed a need to create with my hands early on. My first venture was polymer clay, which is colored clay you manipulate and then bake to cure. I was amazed at how I could create really neat figures and creatures with lots of time and sometimes more patience than I had. I didn't try to create simple things though I went big right away. My first creation was a dragon that was about six inches tall and had colored scales and a very detailed face. I think it took me about a week. I started making people without molds and had a real interest in the fine details such as facial characteristics and toenails. My mom and I did clay together for a few years and I think that is all our family members got for Christmas and birthdays during that time! I soon started making candles, bath salts and soaps. The most enjoyable aspect of creating something valuable or desirable out of raw materials is when you see the reactions of the recipients of the items. Serendipity would happen as had so many times in my past, when one day I went with my husband, who is a very talented tile setter, on a trip to a customer's house and noticed that the homeowner had a table full of beads and wire! I had a hard time peeling myself away. After we left the customer's house I couldn't think of anything else and realized that my interest and excitement was so great that I made a trip to my local craft store and invested in some beads and wire. I quickly realized that this was something special and I had to do it! I studied and researched everything I could find about all aspects of jewelry design. I proudly wore my creations and gave them as gifts, when soon I had orders from friends and co-workers, which of course serendipitously brought me here! And now, here I am, with a successful local business – my jewelry is sold in the Bay area in boutiques, at home shows and events, a couple of other online venues and right here on DaWanda!
