What is Encaustic?

Encaustic is the process of painting with wax, resin, and pigment. My paintings are made using oil paint and a microcrystalline wax. It is as versatile a medium as oil or acrylic, the only challenge is that the wax immediately begins to harden when it is removed from its heat source.

Encaustic painting is an art that dates back to the Egyptians during Roman rule. Wax was originally used to caulk ships as they were crossing the Mediterranean, and the process evolved into an elaborate art form. Eventually, as with many ancient arts, all evidence of encaustic all but vanished until recently. Since the 1950's encaustic has seen a resurgence in the contemporary art world, with such prominent painters as Jasper Johns preferring to work in this medium.

Care and Handling:

Although the painting is made with wax, you should not have any problems with the work "melting" as wax has a very high melting rate. As with any fine art work, you should take care to keep it out of direct sunlight and heat. However, do not put your painting in a car on a hot summer day, and then leave it, as the temperatures in the car can rise high enough to potentially damage the piece. I paint on a rigid surface and seal it with a protective coating.
