This solid oak bureau with pull-out desk was designed as my final project at uni.

My aim was to design and make a versatile piece of furniture for the home working area. It should provide space for using a computer or laptop, reading and writing as well as storing paperwork, files, books and stationery.
It should also be compact enough for small flats. So I designed a shelf unit and a pull-out desk, which can be pushed back when not in use. There is also an extra shelf for cables.

I chose solid oak because of its attractive grain and colour and its durability. I was looking for a material that would last a long time, would age well, be sustainable and could be restored easily if scratched or damaged, but would still be affordable.
As a finish, I chose transparent wax, which can be reapplied and polished if necessary.

To keep the weight of the bureau as low as possible and balance the rather traditional look of oak, I kept the design simple with clean, modern lines.

The back of the bureau can be fixed to a wall for additional strength, brackets are provided.
